The Philosophy and Music Education SRIG

seeks to:

 Bring together a community of thinkers to promote philosophic treatment of the problems of music and music education;

 Clarify the practices of music education through participation in non-dogmatic philosophical thought; to embrace and endorse diversity;

 Build on our rich history; to promote deep thinking about what it means to teach and learn music; to refine one’s beliefs within this tradition;

 Broaden our profession’s conception of arts research, and to embrace and advance the speculative nature of philosophical inquiry;

 Locate music education within a broader paradigmatic spectrum and so help teachers and policy makers define and redefine practices in ever-changing contexts;

 Extend our research beyond the normative confines of Schools of Music and professional conferences; to cultivate fruitful relationships with those outside our immediate field;

 Advance and improve the teaching of music education philosophy;

Encourage the participation of music education philosophers at the start of their careers.
