RESEARCH J. Carter Ingram is a first year Earth Institute fellow and will be researching the relationship between conservation and poverty alleviation in developing countries. The research will explore typologies of biodiversity conservation “success” including an assessment of the environmental and socio-economic factors that contribute to the conservation project viability. Carter completed her Doctorate at the University of Oxford where a departmental studentship funded her to research deforestation and forest conservation issues in Madagascar using a combination of satellite remote sensing techniques and ground collected ecological data. Prior to her doctorate work, she was granted a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship to support her Master’s of Science degree in Environmental Change and Management at the University of Oxford. She wrote her Master’s dissertation on human impact on coastal ecosystems in the Seychelles. Before studying at Oxford, Carter worked at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Marine Laboratory and, following this, the Center for Sustainable Development Studies in Atenas, Costa Rica, where she assisted with program logistics and conducted research on environmentally sustainable coffee plantations and certification schemes for small farmers. Carter’s other relevant experiences have included serving as project manager of a Darwin Initiative Project on sustainable development in South-Eastern Madagascar, participating in workshops on mining in Madagascar, providing environmental consultancy services for Las Alturas conservation farm in Costa Rica, the World Wide Fund for Nature and Oxford Analytica, serving as an intern for the Smithsonian Institute’s Monitoring and Assessment of Biodiversity program and teaching on the use of satellite remote sensing for environmental applications. She has also participated in environmental outreach programs through documentaries on environmental issues in Madagascar and the Seychelles and through the National Science Foundation research ambassador program. |
