Columbia Phishing Spam emails
Recently, Columbia University has been the target of a "phishing" attack.
Identity theft scams are becoming more sophisticated -- Columbia affiliates
have received messages instructing them to report their password (via email)
or risk having their CubMail access disabled.
Columbia University and CUIT will never ask you for your password or any other
private information (e.g. credit card number, social security number) in an
email message. While our spam filters are very good, no system is perfect.
You can help protect yourself against identity theft by following these
suggestions:
* Never send your password or Social Security Number by email to ANYONE
* Banks and financial institutions will never ask for your account numbers, PIN or passwords by email
* Never enter your credit information into a non-secured web page (a secure
web page starts with https:// [note the "S" for "secure"] and will display an
image of a lock in the browser window edges)
* Don't fall for stories about winning the lottery, dealing involving the
wiring of money or any promises of money from relatives you are unaware of
See security.columbia.edu for other security information. Or, use the 'Computer Security' link under 'Quick Links' on the Email & Computing page.
If a particular message claims to be from CUIT, confirm the authenticity of that message by going to www.columbia.edu, navigate to the Email & Computing page and examine the Service Alerts section.

AT&T Blackberry Internet Service Change
AT&T recently changed BlackBerry Internet Service e-mail account addresses from xxxxx@mycingular.blackberry.net to xxxxx@att.blackberry.net where xxxxx is your BlackBerry Internet Service account name. This will cause your BlackBerry device to not receive e-mail communications until you update your mail forwarding to the correct address.
To resolve this issue, please follow the instructions in our FAQ at http://www.columbia.edu/acis/faq/241.html and remove the forwarding from your xxxxx@mycingular.blackberry.net address to the xxxxx@att.blackberry.net address where xxxxx is your account name (typically your Columbia UNI). If you have questions about this or need assistance completing the change, please contact us at askcuit@columbia.edu or 212-854-1919.

As most web data is stored on a file server, and the local disk was copied to the new servers, all pages should look the same on any of the eight servers. However, please report any anomalies which might be caused by these two new hosts to the CUIT Helpdesk at 1-212-954-1919.

Email Interruptions Wednesday Night/Thursday Morning
Between about 11pm and 8:30am yesterday to today, users experienced problems connecting to CubMail and possibly using other mail clients to get to their Cyrus/Cunix mail. The cause was problems on the Cyrus front-end hosts which direct users to the correct backend host where their mail is stored. While some users were unaffected, some experienced problems all night.
Additionally, 5:45am-9:30am, one Cyrus backend became read-only, so users could connect to read their mail, but could not save changes and did not receive any new mail. The cause was a hung process that needed to be stopped.
No email was lost. Any messages that could not be delivered by the second issue will be delivered from the queue.

Email Phishing Attempts Are On The Rise
Recently, Columbia has been targeted by a "phishing" attack. Identity theft spam and scams are becoming more sophisticated -- Columbia affiliates have received messages telling them they must report their password (via email) or risk having their CubMail access disabled. You should never email your password or any other private information (e.g. credit card number, social security number), and Columbia will never ask you to.
While our spam filters are very good, they are not perfect. You need to be on the lookout for Identity theft scams.
* Don't be fooled - never send your password by email to anyone.
* Banks and financial institutions will never ask for your account numbers, pins or passwords by email.
* Never enter your credit information into a non secured web page. A secured web page starts with https:// (note the "S" for "Secure") and will display a lock on the browser frame.
* Don't fall for stories about winning the lottery or promises of money from relatives you are unaware of. If the story sounds too good to be true, it is a scam.
* See security.columbia.edu for other security information. Or, use the 'Computer Security' link under 'Quick Links' on the Email & Computing page.
