To use a laptop computer with the projection system, make sure your laptop is OFF, then connect the cables extending out from inside the podium. To enable the sound of your laptop to come out of the room's speakers, press the "Laptop Computer" button. The Main Volume controls will now adjust the laptop computer volume. If there are problems with the image, please refer to the laptop help page.

Microsoft Office(Word, Excel, Powerpoint) is a standard on all computers, mac or PC. PC Powerpoint files on disk can be used on a mac; on the mac, you must open the file from the program and not from the disk (open powerpoint, select File>open>, then select the disk and then the file).

All computers have internet access. For email you can use Tera Term on the PC, Nifty Telnet on the mac. For browsing the web you can use Internet Explorer or Netscape. We recommend Internet Explorer if you are browsing a site that invloves opening up files associated with another program.

You can FTP using WS_FTP for PC and Fetch for the mac. Anyone with an email account has a certain amount of space for files. By logging into one of these FTP programs you can access certain files on any computer.

For a detailed listing of all programs on the podium computer, please visit the CUIT Labs Software Page. For PC info click on Dell Windows Stations, for mac click on Apple Powermac stations.

Always have your course data on a disk. Occasionally, we perform maintenance on the computers by cleaning out the hard drive.

If you wish to have software installed on the computer, please email your request at least two weeks in advance to erooms@columbia.edu.
