407 Mathematics: A Collaborative Classroom

Room Picture

Room 407 Mathematics is one of two electronic classrooms on the 400 level of Mathematics. 407 Math is a collaborative electronic classroom seating 20 students, including 1 adjustable station providing access for the disabled. A high-speed printer using the Jake Printing System also resides in the room. The printer, an HP 5si with the Postscript option, is capable of printing double-sided sheets. The instructor's equipment is enclosed in a rolling wood cabinet. The classroom also serves as a computer lab when classes are not scheduled for the room.

Instructor's Electronic Podium

The equipment available to the instructor includes a ceiling-mounted Eiki LCD projector, which can accept RGB and video inputs. Video is displayed on an seven foot (100" diagonal) pull-down screen. The podium contains the various electronic resources available to the instructor. These include a Dell Optiplex PC, DVD player, VCR, and camera. The Dell has a built-in CD-ROM drive and an Ethernet network connection. Audio output is channeled through an amplifier that powers two bookshelf speakers located at the front of the classroom.

A room customized touch panel controls the multimedia experience including the audio-visual equipment and the physical room environment (program volume).

Student Computers

Twenty PCs with 17" multisync monitors capable of 1280 x 1024 resolution are available for students. Students can use the printer situated in the room or any other AcIS location through the Jake printing system. Student's desks are set up around the periphery of the room and in a center island. One student station has a movable desktop to accommodate students with special access needs.
