ESRI, which produces ArcView and ArcGIS software, maintains a selection of online courses at the ESRI Virtual Campus. This page outlines how Columbia University affiliates can register for online courses at the Virtual Campus site. If you are not a Columbia affiliate you must contact ESRI directly.
Below is the list of ESRI courses only available to the Columbia community. Also of interest, EDS sponsored GIS Workshops.
To take these course you must:
- Be a member of the Columbia Community with an active UNI (University Network ID). If you are a Columbia affiliate without an active UNI, go to the My UNI page to activate it.
- Obtain a course code.
To apply for a course code you must complete theonline course registration form
that is automatically submitted to Electronic Data Service (EDS). EDS administers the local registration process on behalf of the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN), Columbia's official contact for ERSI products and services. - Register at the Virtual Campus site.
The registration process is done once. On subsequent visits you use the user name and password you set up during registration to re-enter the site.
Before you start:
- Plan for how you will meet the software requirements as stated
in the course description. Your options include:
- Use the CUIT public labs or EDS facility all have ArcGIS.
- Some courses come with a trial version of the needed software that you can install on your own computer. Refer directly to the ESRI web page About Trial Software for information. This software expires, usually after 120 days.
- Ask at the computer lab within your academic department as some departmental labs have ESRI software installed. Lab administrators wishing to inquire about obtaining ESRI software should contact Mark Becker at mbecker@ciesin.columbia.edu.
- Plan for storing the data files you may need during the time you take to complete the course modules. When required they must be available on the PC, either through a drive that supports portable storage (disk or USB drive) or on the PC's temporary work space. Instructions about downloading the files are given within the ESRI training modules. Computers in the CUIT and EDS labs can be used. You can also use space in your CUNIX account if you are comfortable moving files in and out of this space between your sessions.
Finally,
- Use the technical support offered at the ESRI site to solve any problems you have communicating with the course instructions.
- Read the FAQs that are offered throughout the ESRI site.
- EDS does have a selection of ESRI manuals and documentation that can be used at the EDS facility for reading up on topics.
