What is SSEDL?
The Social Science Electronic Data Library (SSEDL) is an extensive health and social science resource that consists of nine topically focused data archives. There are over 300 studies within the archive and each study consists of one or more data files, related documentation, and SAS and SPSS program statement files.

Searching Options
Use the following search options to locate words or phrases within parts SSEDL.
- To search the archive and study descriptions:
- Choose the "SEARCH" button from the left menu bar
- Click on the "Search Study Summaries" button
- and follow the search instructions.
- To search the variable descriptions:
- Choose "SEARCH" from the left menu bar
- Click on the "Search Variable Summaries" link
- and follow the search instructions.
Browsing Options
Use the browsing options
to review the complete list of components within any part of SSEDL.
- To browse archive and study descriptions:
- Choose
the "Data Archives" link on the main page to see a list of the
following archives and within each on you then browse and download
individual studies.

- Choose
the "Data Archives" link on the main page to see a list of the
following archives and within each on you then browse and download
individual studies.
- To browse the complete list of variables within any study:
- Choose the "SEARCH" button from the left menu bar
- Click on the "Search Variable Summaries" button
- and scroll down to the "Browse Data Archive Variables" and select your study of interest.
Downloading
- Ignore the view/order icons (they appear as dark ovals) that allow non-members to request data and follow the key icon set up for Socionet members.
- All studies are in zipped directories, one directory formatted for a UNIX operating system and one formatted for a PC.
- Use either the "PC" or "UNIX" link to download the entire directory to your PC.
- Users should have the space necessary to accommodate the files and the software to process these files. All necessary software and hardware is available at Electronic Data Service (EDS).
