This is a guide to using the workstations on the EDS PC Network. It
covers the following topics:
- Logging in to an EDS workstation
- Creating and Using EDS Workspace
1. Creating your own work directory
2. Saving Files your work directory
3. Taking your files with you
- Locating your files on the EDS Network
Logging in to an EDS workstation
The workstations may already be logged in. But if you sit down at a PC which has a floating dialog box that says Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to Log in, you must log in. Press those three keys. When the log-on dialog box appears, the user name will already be filled in as "edsuser;" to complete the log in, press Enter.
Create your own working directory
The EDS WorkSpace application is used to create a directory for you to save your work in at EDS. To start this application, double click on the EDS Workspace icon on the desktop.
- Enter your UNI
in the dialog box, no password is necessary; - Click the button Create Workspace (on the upper
right).
A directory called e:\work\userid will be created, where userid is your UNI. Note: if you already had a directory and issued this command, old files will not be erased. - Now Quit out of the EDS Workspace application.
Saving Files to your work directory
Whenever you wish to save your work use the save/download/output feature of the application software you are using. Always choose to save it in
drive - e:
folder - work
subfolder - userid (where userid is your UNI).
Often an application's feature to save the output looks much like the standard "Save as" option found in the file menu of a Windows program. A few examples of frequently used interfaces are:
- Downloading from a web interface that is a directory listing of files (as found in DataGate, SSEDL, and the Census Bureau's pages for FTPing files) are described in our guide Options for Downloading Data.
- In CPS Utilities you must set up your work space as the first step in data retrieval. Refer to Using CPS Utilities at EDS
- The steps for using the PC's FTP utility are described in the AcIS guide for Using WINSCP.
Taking your work with you
EDS computers are for extracting data to be used elsewhere. They
are not designed for storage of user files. While we
make every effort to leave user files on the disks for up to two
weeks, file survival cannot be guaranteed for even a short
period. Users should make at least one copy of their files
before leaving the computer. This will avoid data loss from disk
failure, other users' actions, periodic cleanup or disks, or the need
to clear space for a special project.
The options for saving your data are:
- 3.5 inch floppy disk
You must provide your own disk. On each workstation, drive a: is the floppy disk drive. - Zip disk
You must provide your own disk. On each workstation, drive d: is a 250 mg zip drive. - Writeable CD-ROM
You must provide your own writeable CD. There is a networked CD write drive. Ask the consultant for assistance. - Cunix account
If you have enough space in your Cunix account, use the FTP application that can be found under Internet Tools in the Start Menu.
Locating your files on the EDS Network
If you are making a return visit to EDS and wish to use files that you had saved on a particular work station, you can do so from any workstation in EDS. If you cannot sit down at the same machine where you had previously been working, here are the steps you can take.
- Get the name of the PC where your files are saved.
Each machine has a label on the face of the PC tower. You will need the name from this label to proceed. - Create your own folder using EDS Workspace.
On an available computer, use the steps Create your own working directory so that you have work space on this machine. - Use Network Places to reach your files.
On the desk of the PC you use, double click on Network Places icon to display the names of all the workstations on the network. Choose the name of the machine where you had previously stored your files, then the work folder, then your folder (should be named using your Cunix ID). - Copy the files over to the machine where you now working.
You cannot work on the files stored on another PC, you need to move them over (copy and paste) to your current workstation in order to have read/write access.
