The ESRI Online Virtual Campus
ArcGIS is the name of the software package that contains particular GIS applications: ArcTool, ArcCatalog, ArcMap, etc. We will spend most of our time focusing on learning to use ArcMap. Today we will look at ArcMap and get an understanding of how it organizes data in order to perform analyses and display geographic information.
We will use ESRI's on-line web resource for teaching these fundamental concepts. ESRI is the company that produces the ArcGIS software. You are only expected to complete lesson 1 in The Basics of ArcGIS, which is part of course titled Learning ArcGIS 8, Part I. Glance through the course material and complete the exercise, it would be a good idea to complete the self test if time allows.

Steps to complete before starting the course
- Go to the ESRI Virtual Campus
- On the left hand side of the screen, click on the labeled Get Free Training
- Navigate to the course titled Learning ArcGIS 8, Part I
- click on the enroll today link
Please briefly look over the material in first part of the course and complete exercise 1 in "the Basics of ArcGIS" before continuing
