When to use InfoShare
InfoShare is a database containing information from about NEW YORK CITY. Data in the database comes from a variety of sources. Use it for questions that
- refer to geographic areas not used by Census Bureau (Community District, Neighborhoods, NYC School Districts, Health District...see the list in InfoShare menus)
- need data producted by NYC agencies that are not easily available elsewhere (crime, health, social services, immigration...see InfoShare options under the Socio-Demographic and Health data file options).
Most frequently used portions of this site are 2000, 1990, 1980 Census data.
Exercise
Use the "Area Comparison" interface to extract the following data.
- For all the Neighorhoods in Manhattan, the total number of housing units, the number that are occupied. the number that are owner occupied, the number that are renter occupied, and the percentage that are renter occupied.
- Modify the table you built by adding to it a column for the number of households, number of households headed by an African-American and for the number of families headed by an African American.
- Now add another variable the number of persons on all forms of public assistance (this is also a census question)..
- Now look under the Socio-Demographic Data File and select all categories of data listed under "public assistance" list that is under this file

On the EDS website go to data on the Internet and then to the New York City Planning web site. At this web site lookup through the District Profile for Community District 3 in Queens. The look to see what Socioeconomic Tables are published for this area.
