Columbia College
CONTEMPORARY CIVILIZATION
Required Readings -- Fall 1997

This is a list of readings that should be assigned in all CC sections. Each mandatory reading is followed by a number in parentheses indicating the minimum number of class sessions to be devoted to discussion of that reading. Thus, in the Fall, 16 sessions should be devoted to mandatory readings, leaving at least 8 sessions for readings assigned at the instructor's discretion. Longer readings may be excerpted unless this list indicates the contrary.

The list also indicates where copies of the readings may be obtained, as well as the availability of electronic versions of those texts. Note that a number of the shorter readings for the Fall and Spring terms are included in the CONTEMPORARY CIVILIZATION READER, sixth edition (New York: American Heritage, 1997). This text should be available for purchase at Labyrinth Books soon and will also be in College Reserves [Call number to be announced]. Some of the writings found in the Reader are also available in electronic format. These are indicated below under each individual assignment.
