How can I keep my computer safe from theft?

The easiest way to protect your computer is to ensure that it is never left unattended in an unlocked area. This includes student spaces such as lounges, dorm rooms and University libraries. If taking a laptop into an office or public study area, or simply leaving it on your desk while you go to class, it's a good idea to attach a laptop lock. Laptop locks not only make theft more difficult, but act as a powerful deterrent against attempting a theft to begin with. The Department of Public Safety sells laptop locks at cost in Low Library at the southeast entrance.

There are also steps that you can take to increase the chances of your laptop being returned to you should it ever be stolen. The Department of Public Safety offers engraving services at no cost. A code specific to Columbia and to your computer is etched on the machine. When police find the machine, the code tells them to return the machine to Public Safety, who in turn return it to you. Bicycles and personal electronic devices such as iPods and phones can also be engraved in this way.

In addition to engraving, you may install software on your laptop which will assist law enforcement in finding it. The Department of Public Safety offers discounted version of PC Phone Home, a product that works on both Windows and Macintosh OS X.

Remember that the easiest way to protect your computer is to never leave it unattended. Be especially careful while studying in the library, and remember not to leave the door to your dorm room open with valuables inside while moving in or out.
