SLRN: Reading Netnews on CUNIX

Introduction

SLRN is one of the two unsupported programs which are available on the CUNIX Cluster for accessing Usenet netnews (the other is tin). SLRN is a single-purpose program which has a number of advanced news-handling features such as the ability to thread news articles (arrange responses adjacent to original postings), and score files (ability to rate articles based on keywords). It is more powerful than Pine, and easier to use and quicker to learn than trn.

Using Pnews to Post an Article

The Pnews program (note the capital P) allows you to post to newsgroups from outside a newsreading program such as trn/Pine/slrn/tin.

  1. To start the program, type Pnews at the UNIX $ prompt. You will be asked to which newsgroup(s) you want to post, what distribution limitation to put on your posting, and what subject heading to put on the article.

  2. You will next be given a choice to continue or quit, and then Pnews will ask whether to include a prepared file.

  3. Either type a file name (if you have already created a file with an editor such as emacs or Pico), or press the Return key to open an editor allowing you to write your message or edit the headers.

  4. Once you are done, save the file and quit the editor. (If you are using the default editor emacs, you save and quit by pressing Control-X Control-C and answering y when asked if you want to save the file.

  5. Pnews will indicate whether the newsgroup(s) you specified were valid, and offer you a choice from: Check spelling, Send, Abort, Edit, or List?

  6. Use Send to post your article.

More information on using Pnews is available if you type h for help.
