Reformat in Windows XP without Updates

If you are running Windows XP and do not have a CD/DVD of the updates.

  1. Print out this page, if possible
  2. Do NOT connect to the network yet!
  3. Enable the Windows XP Firewall. To do so, right-click on "My Network Places" and select "Properties" from the menu that appears. Double-click on "Local Area Connection" or any other connection listed under "LAN or High-Speed Internet". Select "Properties" from the bottom of the small grey window that appears. Select "Advanced" from the new window that appeared, and check the box next to "Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet". Click "OK" and "Close" to get rid of the two windows that appeared during this process. If it asks you to restart your machine, click "OK".
  4. Wait at least one minute after the machine finishes rebooting, and then reconnect your machine to the network.
  5. Download the updates from the update page and install them in the proscribed order.
  6. Contact CUIT to have your network access restored.
  7. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install all remaining critical updates. You may have to reboot your machine multiple times and go back to the Windows Update page before the process is complete. As soon as it tells you that there are no remaining critical updates to install, you are finished.
  8. Set Windows Update to download future updates automatically.
  9. Install Norton Anti-Virus from the CUIT Security Downloads page.
  10. Reinstall programs and all files you backed up.
