Mathematica
Mathematica licenses are generally available only to Columbia University faculty and staff and installation is limited to machines owned by the University.
However, as an experiment, a limited number of student licenses are available for $50 and are valid through 10/31/08. For information on the student license, send e-mail to sitelic@columbia.edu
Columbia University Information Technology (CUIT) provides this license as a service to the Columbia University community. Potential licensees should refer to the General Policies regarding software licensing. Whenever possible, CUIT will answer questions about the installation and use of Mathematica, but the licensee is responsible for doing the installation and for understanding and maintaining his/her own hardware and operating system.
Version 6.0.1 is the current version of Mathematica. System requirements are available on the Wolfram web site.
The cost of the Mathematica license is as follows:
- 1-19 licensese: $165/license
- 20+ licenses: $83/license
- Unlimited licenses: $4,070 (total)
*One license is the equivalent of either one microcomputer or a single Unix processor.
In addition to the cost of the license, all new licensees and those choosing to upgrade to a newer release of Mathematica with the exception of those purchasing an unlimited license will be required to purchase a copy of the installation CD for $15. Those with an unlimited license will receive one CD as part of their licensing cost. Additional media are available for $15/CD. Version upgrades will be provided as part of the license with an additional media charge.
Multiple departments can combine for a single unlimited departmental license with the following guidelines and conditions:
- CUIT must be informed of and approve of all of the departments covered.
- All installations for all departments are administered by a single individual
- The first two departments are covered for the $4,070 cost of an unlimited departmental license. Each additional department costs $785.
The valid dates of the license are 11/1 through 10/31. The price is fixed and will not be pro-rated. The software will not run after the license expires. Documentation is not included in the price and must be purchased separately and independently. A number of third party books about Mathematica are available, and documentation can be purchased directly from Wolfram by calling (217) 398-5151 or sending mail to info@wolfram.com. Additionally, ordering documentation from Wolfram can be done via their web site: http://www.wolfram.com.
Mathematica licensing is now available online. See the Columbia University Software Center for details.
