MATLAB Research License Information
Columbia University Information Technology (CUIT) has made available a research site license for MATLAB for Windows, Mac OS X, Unix, and Linux. This license is available to Columbia University affiliates for academic-affiliated research and instruction use. The right to use MATLAB for any other purposes, including commercial purposes is expressly prohibited.
If you need a license strictly for classroom/instructional usage, see our MATLAB Classroom License information page.
This license, which is currently for Release R2007b of MATLAB (7.5), has two different options available. These are:
- Concurrent: This option is available for any computers which are connected to the University network. The installation is on your own computer but the licensing is handled through an CUIT-managed License Manager file.
- Group: This option is for any computers which are not connected to the campus network and must have stand-alone installations. There are 4 combinations of toolbox packages in the group option.
Both the Group and Concurrent licenses will run from January 1st through December 31st. The software will not run after the license expires.
The cost of these licenses vary but in all cases they are fixed and will not be pro-rated. These are outlined as follows:
- 1-9 copies: $220/copy
- 10+ copies: $175/copy
The concurrent license comes with all of the following
toolboxes:

Group licensees in need of additional toolboxes have the option of adding them at their discretion by contacting sitelic@columbia.edu. CUIT will not be adding toolboxes to the Concurrent License during the licensing year. However, should demand prove to be high enough, CUIT will consider adding the toolbox on to the following year's license. Please send mail to sitelic@columbia.edu for further information.
New users and those wishing to upgrade can purchase a Media kit for $15. (The media comes in DVD format and includes all operating systems).
MATLAB licensing is now available online for those who wish to purchase a concurrent license. See the Columbia University Software Center for details.
To license a group license, follow the directions below:
- Print off, fill out, and sign the MATLAB Research License Agreement Form.
Note: This agreement must be signed in order to receive the software.
- Prepare payment. All payments must be made from a Columbia University FAS account with an IDI, University Requisition, or FFE document. Payment information must accompany the licensing agreeement. You must agree to install MATLAB on only those machines for which you have paid. This is subject to auditing by Mathworks, Inc.
- Make an appointment to pick up the software by sending mail to sitelic@columbia.edu or calling Julie Lai at 854-7707.
- Upon arrival to pick up the software, show a valid Columbia University ID card.
