UNIX Application Services

If your department is thinking of acquiring a major application that will run on the UNIX operating system, CUIT can provide you with services and support. For administrative applications running on AIX we ensure optimal functioning of the operating system and hardware. We can:
  • Install required software
  • Monitor system integrity
  • Provide performance tuning
  • Perform upgrades
  • Maintain security
  • Manage storage
  • Ensure backup and recovery
  • Provide advice on technical issues
Hardware Platform: Your application will run in an IBM environment that is considered the gold standard for UNIX computing. The system hardware is designed for critical applications that require high availability (the time a system is up and running), scalability (the ability to easily accommodate growth), and versatility. The system can automatically contact IBM for service if an error is detected, which helps to minimize any downtime.

Data Storage: We offer EMC Symmetrix, a world-class storage subsystem, which provides high performance, high availability, fully redundant hardware (dual power supplies, dual disks), and continuous self-monitoring. Like the UNIX system above, the EMC also provides the ability to phone the vendor if a component fails and to switch to a duplicate component. The disk unit continues to run while the service person fixes the defective part, resulting in better performance and reliability for your application.

Backup Protection: Applications are backed up nightly with Tivoli Storage Manager which provides data protection from hardware failures, errors, and unforeseen disasters by storing backup copies both onsite and offsite. The offsite copy is sent daily to the upstate facility, Iron Mountain, for safekeeping.

Related Services: We also offer an advanced job scheduler that provides event-driven automation and full audit trails. Services that run on the systems include various Database Servers, Web Servers and Application Servers.

Some University Clients: The departments we support include Student Information Systems, Human Resources, The Office of Institutional Real Estate, University Development and Alumni Relations, Facilities Management, the Office of the Treasurer and Controller, Columbia Community Service, Financial Systems, and Health Services.
