AcIS ID System Deployment: Cyrus Email System
Summary
The new AcIS email system (whose core is the Cyrus email system software,
and which takes the place of the existing unix-based email system for
users as they are individually migrated) is tightly coupled with the
AcIS identity management system. In particular, the ID System creates
email accounts and manages email quotas. (An eventual consequence of
the new email system will be that unix accounts will not be required
for email access.)
Note that the email system project involves many aspects that do
not relate to the ID System, and those aspects are not covered in this
documentation.
Motivation
The new email system is expected to improve email performance at a
reduced monetary cost; integration with the ID System is essential for
the new email system to operate.
Status
In development; the new email system is scheduled to enter production
for a subset of the university community in June.
Goals
- Transparent integration from the perspective of the user,
including near-real-time account creation
- Ability for AcIS staff to provide support quickly and correctly
- Ease of maintainability
- Deployment of each component as dictated by email system timeline
Scope
The AcIS ID System is responsible for the following aspects of the
email system:
- Creation of email accounts, including selection of home servers
and creation of inboxes
- Removal of email accounts
- Email account quota management
- Directing the mail servers on how to route mail (choice of unix or
Cyrus)
- Email forwarding, auto-replies (including "vacation" messages),
and spam filtering
- Transitioning email accounts on the unix system so that they work
in the new system, including components related to all of the above
- Providing the user tools and support tools required to manage all
of the above
