Why are CUIT's prices higher than what I see advertised at the store?

First, the wireless carriers subsidize the cost of a new device based on the profit they will recoup by locking you into a 2 year contract. For the duration of the contract, if you decide to cancel your service you will likely incur a hefty termination fee that will far outweigh the difference in the initial cost of the device. When you purchase a device through CUIT we assume that contractual risk for you, meaning we do not charge early termination fees. You should be aware that if you lose your device or it is stolen, in particular within the first six months, the replacement cost may be significantly higher than the original cost of the device. This is because the carrier charges a higher cost for replacement devices and we have to pass these charges along.

Second, CUIT provides on-campus procurement and support for the life of your device. This means we deal with the wireless carriers so you don’t have to; we are also available to help you configure your device to connect to your Columbia mail or Exchange account. We have a trained Helpdesk to quickly answer your call or e-mail if there is ever a problem, and a dedicated staff who handle more complicated issues. Hardware problems are supported according to the duration and terms of manufacturer’s warranty. All of this is provided to you at no extra charge*.

Third, our infrastructure allows you to bypass the reimbursement process so that your wireless charges are billed directly to your FAS account, eliminating the need to sort through that often lengthy and complicated process.

*On site support services at your office are charged at our hourly rate of $85. Support at our office is provided at no extra charge, by appointment only, upon escalation of a request submitted through the CUIT Helpdesk.
