Using a modem and a regular telephone line, you can connect to Columbia at bandwidth speeds of up to 56 Kbps. You don't have to worry about differing carriers or long-distance charges. (Please note that some hotels do charge a nominal fee for placing any data calls.) There are no one-time or monthly charges for using this service. Although the call is made to a toll-free Columbia online service from anywhere in the US, there is a usage charge of 8.5 cents per minute billed to your Personal Security Code (PSC) account. Note: If you already have a PSC account, please request to have your 800 number access service activated. Voice Over IPWe offer VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) to the University community. Our VoIP technology allows you to use the University network in a flexible way for both voice and data communications. We provide the VoIP telephone, with a handset and keypad like a regular telephone, that connects to the University's data network via an Ethernet jack (using a Columbia IP address). The VoIP telephone allows you to access Columbia extensions and tie-lines, PhoneMail, and basic RolmPhone features. The VoIP phone does not offer the full range of RolmPhone Features, and inherently posses the same dependencies as PCs: that is, the need for electrical power, availability of the data network, and the need for software configuration and updates. |
