Type `n Roll You’re about to send that that quick response and you realize you’re referencing something that requires a registration mark or an accent (or perhaps another special symbol). How do you do it? Just use your trackball. All you have to do is hold the applicable key and roll the trackball until you get the accent or special character you want. Say it’s an accent on the lower case letter e that you need. Hold the letter key down and roll the trackball until you see the correct accent. Don’t give up if you don’t get the accent you want on the first roll. If it’s a capital E with an accent, you’ll get to that choice as well. If you often use accents, you’ll soon learn whether to roll the trackball to the left or right (or up or down) to quickly get to the accent you need. What if you’re searching for a symbol? Common ones you might need R for the registered mark ®, T for the trademark ™, and so on. Symbol seeking To see all symbols available, press the symbol key (SYM). This opens a window showing you what symbols correspond with each letter. For example, to insert the sign for the British pound, £, press the SYM key. With the window open, type the corresponding letter to the British pound symbol, or click on the £, and that character is inserted into your email message. You might as well “Jump” Need to find all messages on the same subject, and you need to see them, now? Just press J. This shortcut key identifies messages with the same topic – very handy for pulling together an entire message thread. How to Jump: 1. Open an email message for which you have received responses. 2. Press the J key on your keyboard. 3. The oldest message with the same subject should be displayed. 4. Press J again, and the next message in the thread is displayed. 5. To go back to a message that you previously jumped to, press K to return. 6. You can also select a message from the Inbox that is unopened and press the J key. If you want to read the contents of messages identified with the same subject, you must open them. Note: The Jump feature is designed to identify messages with unmodified subject lines. If the subject line of the message is modified, the response thread may be broken and the Jump feature may not operate as designed. Program swapping made easy Save yourself time and hassle when switching programs on your BlackBerry smartphone. This tip shows you how to switch programs in about the same time it takes to say “Ready, Set, Go!”: 1. Hold the Alt key and press the Escape button. 2. Continue to hold the Alt key and highlight a program from the menu that appears. 3. Release the Alt key to switch to that program. That’s it. You’ll find this Alt > Escape > Select program function especially handy when you need to compare information between documents on the run. Essentially, it allows you to minimize programs, documents and email messages just as you would on your computer.
