FAQ's

Why can’t I have the newest XYZ phone?

We have standardized on the BlackBerry solution for our own CUIT employees, and we recommend these devices as the most cost effective means of meeting your business communication needs. We also provide support for iPhone. We continually test new devices to determine the feasibility of expanding our offerings. We do offer “special order” procurement for other devices, but regret that we are unable to offer the same high level of support and service as for the BlackBerry and iPhone.

Why can’t I use my personal BlackBerry or iPhone to connect to my account? Why won’t you help me with my AOL (or other 3rd party) e-mail account?

Most devices will allow you to connect to your Columbia e-mail; your wireless carrier can assist you. If you have an Exchange account you will need a BlackBerry Enterprise Server account in order to enable full wireless synchronization of your account with your BlackBerry, and this is only provided to devices purchased through CUIT. Regrettably, because our support overhead is built into the cost of the equipment, we are unable to provide support for personal devices, 3rd party applications or e-mail accounts.

How can I encrypt my BlackBerry device?

All data that passes between your device and the CUIT BlackBerry Enterprise Server is encrypted according to the 3DES standard. Newer devices allow you to enable an additional layer of encryption from the device itself. To do so, follow the instructions below. Note that it is possible that enabling this setting will cause a performance lag on your device because of the memory required by the device encryption process.
