CellularLD - Prepaid International Long Distance for your Mobile Phone

We have an agreement with MobileSphere, a company that offers CellularLD, for affordable rates for international long distance from your mobile phone. For additional information or to sign up, please visit the CellularLD page.

Local Phone Service Alternative

Verizon is the local carrier for New York City. You can choose to have Verizon instead of Rolm service (except if you live in Broadway Residence, Furnald, Schapiro, and Sulzberger, which are not wired for Verizon service).

If you order a phone line through Verizon, you will have to pay for installation, as well as a monthly telephone charge, surcharges, and taxes. In addition, you will be charged for all inter and intra campus calls, and you will need to provide your own answering machine.

You will, however, have the option of selecting a long distance carrier, since the calls you make are billed back to your Verizon telephone number. Applications are available at the following locations:
  • Verizon (installer's office) - 115 Low Library
  • CUIT Communications - 202 Philosophy Hall
  • University Apartment Housing - 400 West 119 Street
Long Distance Alternatives

You may chose to use other long distance carriers, but you must arrange for that service yourself. You will be able to use the RolmPhones to make off-campus calls but you will need to use the carrierīs calling card. If you use a calling card or make a third-party or collect calls, you must use the correct access numbers. See Calling off campus without a PSC, under Dialing Instructions.

Services for Students With Disabilities

CUIT Communications is available to accommodate any Columbia student with a special telecommunications need. Facilities and assistance for persons with disabilities include:
  • Telephone heights: All publicly accessed Rolm and coin telephones are installed at a height that is easily reached from a wheelchair.
  • Hearing-aid-compatible handsets: Rolm and coin telephone handsets with more sensitive microphones are available.
  • Telecommunications devices for the deaf: All RolmPhones and other campus phones provide TDD compatibility.
  • Elevator telephones: All elevators are equipped with emergency telephones that automatically dial the Security Office at the touch of a button.
  • PhoneMail message waiting: PhoneMail provides both audible and visual indications that a message is waiting.
  • Audible call waiting: The call waiting feature may be designed to indicate audibly and visibly that a second caller is waiting.
Special RolmPhone designs or other telecommunications needs can be provided. Call 212-854-6251 (ext. 46251) for assistance.
