120 Liber Amicorum of Congratulations and Good Will to G.M. on the Occasion of the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary of The Limited Editions Club
[New York], 99 leaves, May 11, 1954
On Tuesday evening, May 11, 1954, seven hundred writers, critics, illustrators and printers gathered at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel's Starlight Roof in New York to celebrate the silver anniversary of The Limited Editions Club. The evening's celebrations concluded with a midnight toast to the founder and director of the Club, George Macy, on the arrival of his fifty-fourth birthday; Horace Mann then presented to him this stout volume, bound in full brown morocco, containing nearly one hundred affectionate letters, original drawings with warm inscriptions, and commemorative broadsides printed for the occasion. The title-leaf was designed and printed by T. M. Cleland, who also contributed a foreword, and the detailed charcoal portrait of George Macy by Norman Rockwell appeared as the frontispiece. Original drawings in the Liber Amicorum include work by Valenti Angelo, Fritz Eichenberg, Thomas Hart Benton, Lynton Lamb, Bernard Lamotte, Edward A. Wilson and Lynd Ward. Benton's pen, pencil and wash sketch is a self-portrait of the artist on horseback toasting the founder and the anniversary.
