| English manuscript on vellum, 388 leaves, England, ca. 1440 (Plimpton 263) | |
| Translated by John of Trevisa, this manuscript of the comprehensive thirteenth century encyclopedia bears printers' marks throughout, indicating that type was set from this copy for the first edition printed in England by Wynkyn de Worde in 1495. Large rose and blue initials on gold grounds and gold-stemmed, foliated borders richly illuminate the beginning of each book. The arms of the Chaworth family appears in the illumination on folio 9, signifying that the manuscript was made for Thomas Chaworth of Wolverton, Nottinghamshire. | |
