18 Canon missae
[Mainz, Johann Fust and Peter Schoeffer, 1458]
Printed at the very beginning of printing from moveable type by the immediate successors of Gutenberg, the work is known in two complete copies of twelve leaves, at the Bodleian Library in Oxford and at the Nationalbibliothek in Vienna. Columbia's copy, originally in The Typographic Library of the American Type Founders Company, consists of nine leaves which are bound in the Missale Cracoviense printed by Peter Schoeffer in 1494 in Mainz. The "Canon of the Mass" consists of prayers which do not vary with different dioceses as other parts of the service may. Of particular interest are the intricate two color initials which are printed in perfect register, demonstrating the great technical abilities of the early printers.
