27 Francisco Pizarro ca. 1476-1541
Signed document granting power of attorney to Bernardino de San Pedro to collect 628 gold pesos, 2 p., 1538?
The conquistador Francisco Pizarro conquered the Inca Empire and thereby laid the foundations for three centuries of Spanish rule in South America. When he signed this document, he was at the height of his power in Peru, even though as a boy he had been an illiterate swineherd. The Spanish conqueror executed his signature by means of two little "racquets" carefully drawn, about an inch high, and between this double paraph appears his signature. Three years later the avaricious and treacherous Pizarro was murdered by assassins at dinner.
