37 Mamusse Wunnetupanatawe Up-Biblium God
Cambridge, Samuel Green and Marmaduke Johnson, 1661-1663
The first Bible printed in the Western hemisphere and the first Bible translated in a new language as a means of evangelization, the "Eliot Indian Bible" is a translation into the Algonkian language by John Eliot, the Cambridge trained missionary who was known as "The Apostle to the Indians." Because the printing of a Bible was such a great undertaking, it was several decades before another version of the Bible, in any language, was printed in the Western hemisphere.
