51 Charles Willson Peale 1741-1827
Miniature portrait of Alexander Hamilton
Oil, 1.75 x 1.4 inches, 1780
American portrait painter, naturalist and patriot, Charles Willson Peale was a distinguished painter of American statesmen of the Revolutionary era; of George Washington alone, he painted some sixty portraits. The miniature portrait of the twenty-three year old Hamilton was painted in 1780, the year of his marriage, at the instance of his wife (nee Elizabeth Schuyler). At the time Hamilton was serving as Washington's secretary and aide-de-camp. Although he attended King's College, as Columbia was then known, from 1773 to 1774, his education was interrupted by the American Revolution; he received an honorary master's degree in 1788.
