71 Hector Berlioz 1803-1869
Nocturne
Manuscript, 4 p. [Paris, ca. 1830]
Berlioz played the guitar with mastery, and early in his musical career partially supported himself by giving lessons and writing exercises and beginner's pieces for the instrument. These early compositions were published, but none have been traced. He used the guitar once or twice for brief passages in later scores, but never as the chief accompaniment. This unpublished song for two sopranos is now Berlioz's only known piece written for the guitar, an instrument which deeply influenced his harmonic style.
