88 Rudyard Kipling 1865-1936
Poems published in The Pall Mall Magazine
Manuscripts, 4 p., ca. 1893
These four holograph manuscripts were prepared by the author as printer's copy for setting up the poems for their publications in The Pall Mall Magazine for June 1893 ("Bobs"), February 1894 ("For to admire"), June 1894 ("Follow me 'ome") and August 1894 ("Back to the army again"). Each manuscript has been separated into three parts for the convenience of the typesetters, whose names are written in pencil in the left-hand margins. All but "Bobs" were numbered among the "Barrack Room Ballads" as published in Kipling's The Seven Seas in 1896; "Bobs" was included in the Bombay edition of Kipling's works in 1914, although in the interim a number of pirated publications appeared. "Bobs" is Kipling's tribute to Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts of Kandahar, England's military hero, known for his successful campaigns on the Indian frontier; he became one of the most popular officers in the British army, and his name became familiar throughout the world largely because of Kipling's well-known lines.
