90 Siegfried Sassoon 1886-1967
Notebooks
Manuscript, 13 volumes, ca. 1894-1909
The development of Sassoon as a poet from the age of eight to twenty-two can be charted in the approximately 580 pages of his notebooks. They contain over two hundred drafts of poems and nineteen stories, several prose pieces, transcripts of his favorite poems, and numerous watercolor, crayon and pencil drawings. The earliest, "Some of My Favorites," is a volume of short essays about butterflies, and the latest are the notebooks of 1906, 1908 and 1909 comprising working drafts of poems written in his early twenties, including four that were published in his first book, Poems, 1906, and several that appeared in Orpheus in Diloerym and Sonnets and Verses, both published in 1908. There is also a calligraphic manuscript inscribed to his mother, "A Pageant of Dreams," 1905, containing twenty poems, of which seven were also included in the poet's first book.
