93 L. Frank Baum 1856-1919
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
Chicago, George M. Hill, 1900
Baum inscribed this copy of the first Oz book "To my dear Sister Mary Louise Brewster with my best love, L. Frank Baum, Chicago, June 20, 1900." Although the book was not published until September, this is one of the advance copies which Baum circulated to his relatives and closest friends before it was placed on sale. Illustrated by W. W. Denslow, the most famous in the Oz series tells the story of Dorothy and her dog Toto, blown away in a tornado from Kansas to the mythical country of Oz. The popularity of the work led to thirteen sequels, a dramatization in 1902 and an extraordinarily popular motion picture in 1938.
