Welcome Summer Interns and Conference Housing Guests!
We are here to help you with your Internet connection during your stay on the Columbia University campus. For assistance connecting to the University network during your stay, instructions have been organized on your behalf and made available here.
Please read our statement about copyright. We at Columbia University want to provide you with the best network service possible, but we are also very serious about following the law with regards to copyright and intellectual property. You might lose your Internet connection for the entire summer if you violate this policy.
Protecting Your Computer from Viruses
If your computer is found to be infected with a virus or worm, Internet access will be disabled until the machine is properly fixed and secured. If the same problem or a similar problem occurs again during the summer, your Internet access will be suspended for the remainder of your stay.
Visit the CUIT Security homepage for suggestions on how to keep your computer secure. You can use any public computer terminal on campus to access this page.
Please note that Summer Interns and Conference Housing Guests are not eligible for Columbia University's version of Symantec AntiVirus, but may have the option to use antivirus software provided by the university they attend. In addition, our Residential Computing Consultants will gladly assist you with purchasing your own software.
How to Connect Your Computer to the Network
- Plug one end of your cable into the Ethernet port in your computer, and the other end into the jack in your room.
- Start (or restart) your computer.
- Verify that you are connected. Try to browse the web and see what happens.
If you cannot browse the Web or read email at this point, you should check to make sure your computer has a properly installed Ethernet card. Also, please check our configuration instructions.
Sending Email from Your Room
You may experience problems sending email from your room using your personal account if you are a guest and do not have a Columbia University email account. To remedy this situation, you should consider creating a web-based email account on a server such as Yahoo or gMail. Please send email from a public terminal to resnet@columbia.edu if you have any questions.
Getting Help
If you need assistance getting your Ethernet connection to work, call the CUIT Service Desk at 212-854-1919, or contact a Residential Computing Consultant by sending email from a public terminal to resnet@columbia.edu.
We will be glad to check your jack, cable and computer configurations. If you lose your connection because your computer has become compromised or has a virus, you can get help from Techs-in-a-Sec for an hourly rate.
If you are only on campus for a few days, you should use one of our public computer terminals. We might not be able to help you get a connection before you leave. If you must have a network connection in your room, you should speak to the director of your program. He or she can contact our computer helpdesk.
