CHINESE LETTER CODES:
Elementary W: for students who understand Chinese as ordinarily spoken or have studied Chinese in high school for at least 2 years
Elementary N: for students who have a slight understanding of Chinese
Elementary Z: for students who have no exposure to Chinese
Intermediate W: with more emphasis on the formal written language
Intermediate N: emphasis on all language skills
  Students who speak the language at home or have studied 2 years of Chinese will not be accepted into the N oz Z courses.

CHINESE W1301x-W1302y Introduction to Classical Chinese 3 pts x: Lening Liu; Y: Wei Shang, MWF 10-10:50 Prerequisite: Chinese C110l-C1102, Japanese C120l-C1202, or Korean W1201-W1202, or equivalent. This course is prerequisite to Chinese W4007-W4008. An introduction to the classical Chinese written language. Emphasis on the fundamentals of grammar and style, as reflected in representative core texts from the classical tradition, with presentation of elementary materials on classical phonology and lexicology. CHINESE W4007x-W4008y. Readings in Classical Chinese. 4 pts TR 10:35-11:50. x: M. Kern; y: K. Ono. Prerequisite: 1 year of classical Chinese (Chinese W1301x-W1302y or its equivalent.) Admission after placement test. Focussing on Tang and Song prose and poetry, the course introduces a broad variety of genres through close readings of chosen texts as well as the specific methods, skills, and tools to approach them. CHINESE G6003x Colloquium on Chinese Poetry: Shijing and Chuci 3 pts M. Kern, R 2:10-4. Prerequisites: 1 year of Classical Chinese (Chinese W1301-W1302 or its equivalent.) The two earliest anthologies of Chinese poetry, representing two distinct traditions, will be approached through selected readings and a survey of traditional and modern scholarship. Close, linguistically guided readings of individual poems (in the original language) are complemented by considerations about the poems' original cultural context, their canonization, the relation between poem and commentary, and the relevance of these origins for the Chinese tradition of poetry and poetics.
