Introduction to Courseworks@Columbia
In Spring 2002, Columbia University launched CourseWorks@Columbia, a course
management system that allows faculty members to update their course Web sites with ease. Using CourseWorks,
faculty have the freedom to develop a basic course Web site on their own and work with CCNMTL to develop enhancements
such as multimedia
presentations, case studies, training environments and strategic uses for
communications tools.
CCNMTL's Educational Technologists are available to provide assistance to
faculty and instructors who want to use technology in their
courses. To set up an appointment, email ccnmtl@columbia.edu or call
212-854-9058. We also provide hands-on training in course Web site
development and other technical skills, and have prepared documentation
such as CourseWorks documentation and a
Web Publishing Guide for those
faculty members who wish to work independently.
Faculty can use CourseWorks to:
- Inform students about the classroom location, meeting time, and instructors' contact information
- Present the course introduction and overview
- Add and edit basic course information such as a weekly syllabus and reading lists
- Facilitate online discussions
- Disseminate documents, assignments and short readings to the class
- Present film clips, slides, maps, animations or audio clips.
- Provide links to online library resources including library reserves, reference tools and electronic books.
Skeleton course Web sites are automatically entered into CourseWorks for all registered Columbia University sections.
