Urban Environmental Justice:

This website is the work of a group of students from Columbia University as part of an Environmental Justice class taught by Professor Jason Corburn. The site is meant to serve as a resource for anyone interested in issues of Environmental Justice (EJ), but focuses on EJ on urban settings in particular.

Image above : The image above is of a brownfield site in the Soundview neighborhood of the South Bronx. The 11-acre site was formerly home to Loral Electronics, an electronics manufacturer and subcontractor to the US Airforce. Despite the discovery of heavy metals and volatile compounds in the site's soil, the New York School Construction Authority leased a portion of the site in order to build the Soundview Educational Campus, a NYC public high school on the site. In leasing the site, the School Construction Authority was able to avoid conducting environmental impact reviews. For a review of this case, please see:http://www.cpeo.org/brownfields/SoundviewNY.doc
