Why Should My Daughter Join a Sorority at Columbia University?
As a member of Alpha Chi Omega, your daughter will reap innumerable and lifelong benefits. Here are just a few of the reasons why becoming a member of Alpha Chi Omega is such a rewarding experience
- Scholarship
Greek letter organizations were founded on the principles of successful scholarship. Alpha Chi Omega is committed to the academic progress and achievement of all its members. We provide academic opportunities through study hours, tutoring, recognition for achievement, and personal attention. In fact, most of our women feel that their grades improved drastically after becoming a member of Alpha Chi Omega.
- Sisterhood
Forming lasting friendships is an integral part of your daughter’s college experience. As a member, she will be able to bond with more than sixty other women who have a variety of interests and are involved in numerous activities on campus. Alpha Chi encourages its members to be themselves and feels that each woman can contribute something different, but equally important, to our sorority. We take our role as sisters very seriously so that each member always feels welcome and will never be without someone who can help her whenever she needs it.
- Leadership
Aside from the social aspects of the sorority, membership in Alpha Chi Omega offers women a variety of opportunities to become involved in numerous activities on campus. Our sisters are involved in a variety of clubs and organizations such as Orientation Leaders, Tour Guides, Student Governing Boards, Intramural Sports, Academic Clubs, and Political Organizations.
- Service
Alpha Chi Omega supports the continuing fight against domestic violence by holding fundraisers and other events throughout the year to raise money to support this cause. At our annual Lip Sync, members of the Greek Community come out to help us fundraise for Safe Horizon, a local Domestic Violence Shelter in Harlem. We also host a candlelit ceremony to commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month every October. All of this, along with other community service projects both independent and involving the university, make our dedication to community service one of the most important aspect of our sorority.
- Anti-Hazing
During your daughter’s membership, she will not be asked to do anything that will harm her physically, mentally, or emotionally. This is Alpha Chi’s promise to you and your daughter. In fact, each collegiate chapter must sign a contract against hazing and demeaning activities on a yearly basis which is kept on file at Alpha Chi’s headquarters.
Alpha Chi strives to fulfill the true spirit of sisterhood, and encourage its members to develop, through personal effort, a high moral and mental standard. As beneficiaries of the heritage and history of the sorority, we expect each member to be both true to and worthy of the legacy and principles of Alpha Chi.
By becoming a sister, a woman voluntarily pledges to reflect the values and standards of our sorority. This means that, once initiated, she must uphold the five membership criteria upon which her membership is based: Academic Interest, Character, Financial Responsibility, Leadership Ability, and Personal Development. Each woman is expected to bring honor and integrity to Alpha Chi by positively representing the sorority and respecting herself and others. |
