| Alpha Chi Omega has adopted the support of victims of domestic violence as a national altruistic project. All members, collegiate and alumnae, provide service in their community to local shelters or organizations that aid victims of domestic violence. The emphasis of this project is to offer members’ time and energy to women, children, and organizations in need.
Last year, collegiate chapters raised over $300,000.00 for their local domestic violence shelters and programs.
Our chapter, Theta Psi, works closely with a local organization called Safe Horizon. Safe Horizon is a Harlem-based women's shelter, sheltering woman and children that have been victims of domestic violence. This establishment protects its members with a witness-protection-like program and also helps them to start a new life without violence. They also provide counseling for the women and children that seek their help.
As a chapter we hold an annual philanthropic event that the other Sororities and Fraternities on campus participate in. We sponsor the annual "Lip Sync" competition in which the newest members of the campus sororities and fraternities compete. Last year, Alpha Chi Omega's team placed first prize and raised over $500.00 dollars for Safe Horizon. The Lip Sync was a lot of hard work, but we had a really great time and it was also very fulfilling to know that all proceeds went to such a great cause. Everyone involved put their heart and soul into it and made a great difference.
Our Theta Psi chapter also supports the Alpha Chi Omega foundation, which provides support to individual members, chapters and to the Fraternity in the form of educational grants. The Foundation financially supports a variety of educational programs, including Kristin's Story. |
