MISSION STATEMENT

AdHoc, Columbia's Progressive Magazine, seeks to provide a forum for a strong, progressive voice in the Columbia community. Our aim is to create a publication that addresses issues directly impacting the Columbia community, as well as current events of related social and political interests, in a thoughtful and creative manner. The content of each issue is meant to provoke discussion and healthy dialogue between progressive voices and others on campus.

AdHoc includes feature articles on current issues, thought pieces on relevant dilemmas, fiction and poetry in the belief that creative art is inevitably linked to the development of thought, and original graphic art and photographs to give a forum to student originality.

2007—2008 ACADEMIC YEAR

AdHoc began this year with an issue analyzing events in which Columbia was impacted by controversies in the Middle East: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's visit, Nadia Abu El Haj's tenure case, and racist and Islamophobic graffiti found on campus. Due to a shortage of layout staff, the Winter 2007 issue could not be printed in a timely fashion, and was published only on the Web.

2006—2007 ACADEMIC YEAR

AdHoc began the 2007-2007 school year with an “Issue Orientation,” providing an overview of pressing issues facing Columbia and the community. The second issue of the semester focused on Columbia's place in the global community. Our feature article addressed the Minuteman protests, immigration, and free speech. The third issue focused on consumption: how we consume, the choices we make, and the consequences for ourselves and the world around us.

The April 2007 issue was the fourth and last of the year. It featured an exploration of the market in the eggs of women students at elite colleges as well as discussions of antiwar protest, guerrilla gardening, and the whiteness of most Columbia publications.

2005—2006 ACADEMIC YEAR

AdHoc published its inaugural issue in the Fall 2005 semester. Our feature article addressed Columbia's planned expansion into Manhattanville, and called for a better dialogue between members of the community and the Columbia administration. Other articles addressed issues including eminent domain, ideological diversity, and intelligent design.

In the Spring 2006 semester, AdHoc published two more issues. The second issue, distributed in early March, addressed the question of Gender and Sexuality. The third issue, distributed in May, addressed Privilege in Education.
