The place has changed a bit since the Dutch fur traders arrived in 1621. The English took over in 1664 and relinquished control -- but only after a fight -- in 1783. During the next two centuries, people from all over the world made their way to New York, and the city they built is unlike any other city on earth. Here are a few of the places that make New York, New York, such a wonderful town.

One of the many things I love about
New York City is that you can travel
around the world and never leave
the five boroughs. Every language
is spoken here, every cuisine is
served here and every religion is
practiced here. No matter where
you come from, when you
come to New York City,
you're coming home.
- Rudolph Giuliani, Mayor of New York City
