Exhibition: The Silent Strength of Liu Xia
The Silent Strength of Liu Xia opens on Thursday, February 9 and continues through Thursday, March 1, 2012. An
opening reception with commentary from Guy Sorman and renowned China scholar Andrew Nathan, the Class of 1919
Professor of Political Science at Columbia University, will be held on February 9, from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Gallery hours are
weekdays from 9:30 to 4:30 pm; Saturdays from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
Co-sponsored with the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies, Freedom House and the Institute for the Study of Human Rights and realized with the generous donations of Jim Glanzer, Burton Haimes, Mr and Mrs Lippman, and anonymous donors.

GRANT FOR AFRICAN STUDIES PROGRAM
We are pleased to announce that the Partner University Fund (PUF), a fund from the French Embassy, has awarded a grant to the “Joint African Studies Program,” a collaborative project led by Professor Mamadou Diouf (Columbia University) and Professor Richard Banégas (Université Paris I). This multi-faceted project aims to support research, student mobility, faculty exchange and publications in African Studies between the two partner institutions over the next three years.

The Alliance Program is pleased to announce the launch of the 2012-2015 Partner University Fund (PUF) Call for project.
The Partner University Fund(PUF) was established in May 2007 under the auspices of the FACE Foundation, NYC and the Embassy of France to the United States with the aim to promote innovative and sustainable partnerships between French and US institutions for research and education. PUF supports emerging transatlantic partnerships with the potential to continue beyond the initial 3 years grant and currently supports 55 multifaceted partnerships in all fields of study, including projects initially generated under the Alliance program.
Partnerships may combine elements such as:
- Joint initiatives in Research and publications
- Faculty and postdoctoral mobility
- Collaboration in teaching
- Shared programs
- Joint and dual degrees at the master’s and PhD levels
Research partnerships established within the Alliance network are eligible.
Alliance Visiting Professor, Jean-Pierre Filiu, has been interviewed or quoted in many newspapers and media outlets, from 7 countries, this semester, as he commented on the uprisings in the Middle East.
An historian and Associate Professor at Sciences Po, Jean-Pierre Filiu is teaching at the Columbia School of International and Public Affairs this spring.

in the fall 2002, the Alliance Program is a non-profit transatlantic joint-venture
between Columbia University and three French prestigious institutions,
The École Polytechnique, Sciences Po and the Université
of Paris I Panthéon Sorbonne.
Alliance is an innovative program whose aim is to initiate and
accompany new initiatives in the fields of education cooperation,
research collaboration, and policy outreach. Over the last seven
years the Alliance’s scope of activities have included
the organization of numerous academic conferences both in
Paris and
in New York, the setting up of international multidisciplinary
research teams, and the creation of joint-courses and curricula
targeting the students of its founding partners.
