Renowned for its alternative programming, WKCR 89.9FM—Columbia’s student-run radio station—held an open house on February 5 to celebrate its return to full broadcasting power two years after the destruction of the World Trade Center. A new antenna at 4 Times Square installed last fall now allows the station to reach 12 million listeners in the tristate area.

From 9/11 until last fall, the station broadcast using an antenna atop Carmen Hall, cutting its range by 91 percent and reducing its potential audience to two million. “Last year was about getting our antenna back,” said Station Manager Matt Herman ’06CC. “This year is about getting our listenership back.”
