Gifts


• A gift of $15 million to the Earth Institute from the LENFEST FOUNDATION, headed by University Trustee H.F. “Gerry” Lenfest (’58Law), will endow the first Earth Institute professorship, promote sustainable development, and advance solutions to global climate change and global poverty.

• The RUSSELL BERRIE FOUNDATION has committed an additional $12 million for the support of CUMC’s Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center, the New York area’s only comprehensive diabetes care facility.

• Columbia University Medical Center will use a $7.5 million award from the
KAVLI FOUNDATION to establish the Kavli Institute for Brain Science. The new institute, to be led by Nobel laureate Eric Kandel, MD, University Professor of Psychiatry, Biochemistry, and Molecular Biophysiology, will focus on the development of novel experimental and computational strategies for analyzing and deciphering how signaling in neural circuits controls behavior. It will be one of nine such centers established by the Foundation in the United States and the Netherlands to study
neuroscience, cosmology, and nano-
science.

• A donation of $4.7 million by HARRIET HEILBRUNN will fund the Harriet and Robert H. Heilbrunn Scholars Program, which will benefit master’s degree candidates in public health who agree to work in the public or nonprofit sector upon graduating.
