Department Officers & Staff
Emily Ann Gabor

Emily Ann Gabor is responsible for administrative management of the Department of Art History and Archaeology and reports to the Chairman. She hires, trains, and supervises the department staff. She works closely with the Business Manager to ensure the department stays within its budgets and adheres to University policy. She is the point-person for department personnel issues, and works closely with the Chairman on faculty development. She is also the editor for the department's annual newsletter, 826 Schermerhorn. Emily has a BA from Brown University and an MFA from Maryland Art Institute.

Reporting to the Department Administrator, Joshua Sakolsky provides fiscal oversight for the department. He manages the department's administrative and programmatic budgets and monitors its instructional and personnel expenses. He advises the Chairman and faculty on historical levels of spending and developing budgets, and provides reports as needed. He approves purchases and spending for goods and services. With the ADA, he processes appointments for teaching fellows and adjuncts. He is also the primary liaison for the department with the Office of International Students and Scholars (ISSO). Josh manages department grants and serves as the department's effort reporting coordinator.

Working closely with the Business Manager, Sonia Sorrentini processes payments for goods and services for the department. She coordinates the department's participation in the Faculty Research Allowance Program (FRAP) and other reimbursement and special funding programs for faculty. She hires work study students for faculty and the office and she plays an important role in coordinating department events and receptions. She is the department liaison with Facilities Area Management. Her other responsibilities include coordinating the planning and logistics of faculty searches in cooperation with the Chairman and members of search committees.

Chris Newsome's responsibilities include fielding inquiries for the MA and PhD programs, advising graduate students on degree requirements, scheduling orals, dissertation proposals, language exams and coordinating graduate admissions for the department. He works closely with the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS), as well as with the Director of Art Humanities and the Director of the MA in Modern Art/Critical and Curatorial Studies Program. Chris joined Columbia with five years of administrative experience from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he worked in the Writing Center.

Working closely with the Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS), the coordinator checks progress to degree for undergraduate art history majors and notifies undergraduates about art history internships and other programming for majors. In addition, he assists the Department Chairman and coordinates course schedules for the department.
