The Department of Art History and Archaeology expresses its firm solidarity with all our students who have been subjected to arrest, suspension and harassment as they exercise their constitutional rights of free speech and peaceful assembly. We unequivocally condemn the decision to bring armed New York City police in riot gear into our campus, and the arrests and suspension of over 100 students. This decision constitutes an unconscionable threat to both free speech and public safety. We strongly urge President Shafik to ensure that all charges against the student protestors are dropped, their suspensions revoked, and the records of sanctioned students expunged.

We continue to support the rights of all students to peaceful protest and condemn all forms of hate speech, harassment, and incitements to violence. We reaffirm our staunch commitment to academic freedom without interference from external actors. The university administration and the President’s office must engage with faculty and students, and armed police must be removed from campus immediately.
