Jack Hartnell is a specialist in the art and architecture of the medieval period, where his research focuses on the visual culture of late medieval and early Renaissance medicine. He has previously held fellowships at The Courtauld Institute of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Max-Planck-Institut für Wissenschaftsgeschichte in Berlin, and a Visiting Curatorship at Two Temple Place, London.

He is currently working on several book projects, including a monograph study of the cryptic medieval image of the Wound Man, an edited volume on the history of scrolls, and a book aimed at general audiences offering an introduction to medieval medicine and its imagery (under contract with Wellcome Publishing/Profile Books).
