Biography

Robert Schindler specializes in Northern art of the 14th–16th centuries with an emphasis on French illuminated manuscripts, both religious and secular. His approach combines stylistic and formal analysis with the study of devotional practices, patronage, book collecting, literary traditions and the impact of humanism on book culture in general. Schindler has published on manuscript illumination from Bourges during the second half of the 15th century as well as 16th-century French patronage.

His current interests focus on early humanist illuminated books, production processes of illuminated manuscripts, as well as pictorial innovation and patronage in this transitional period.
