The department will offer up to two Senior Thesis Research Fellowships
for travel to distant museums and building sites, libraries,
or archives. This travel is normally undertaken during the summer
before senior year. Fellowship applications consisting of a
carefully edited thesis proposal and supporting letter from
a faculty sponsor.

Description
Columbia’s Department of Art History and Archaeology will offer an internship in Museum Registration at the Wallach Art Gallery/Office of Art Properties in the 2009_10 academic year. The student intern will gain experience in the methods used to track storage and movement of art in a collection as well as those objects temporarily on loan to the gallery. Responsibilities may include the archival numbering of objects with accession numbers, conducting campus loan inventories, assisting in the cataloging of recent acquisitions, maintaining and developing the data collected on individual objects, and assisting with shipping and insurance requirements for loans both into and out of the institutions. The intern will work under the supervision of the Assistant Director of the Wallach Art Gallery and will work closely with both the Assistant Director and the curator of Art Properties who is also Director of the gallery. The intern will work an approximately 12 hours a week throughout the academic year for a total of 24 weeks. (Thanksgiving week, winter break and spring break excluded). During this time interns will study registration practices, learn to prepare condition reports, conduct inventories and assist the professional staff in the management of the collection and with incoming loans to the gallery. The total time commitment for the year is 280 hours.
Eligibility
Sophmores, juniors and seniors majoring or concentrating in Art History at Columbia College who qualify for financial aid are eligible to apply. The internship begins in mid-September and takes place throughout the course of the academic year. Applicants must be students in good standing with an excellent academic record.
Application Process
Applications are due on September 18 and should be submitted to the Wallach Art Gallery in 826 Schermerhorn. A complete application consists of the following items:
- College transcript
- One letter of recommendation from an art history professor, which should be sent directly to the Wallach Art Gallery.
- A personal Statement explaining your interest in the internship.
- Interview
A committee consisting of the Director and Assistant Director of the Wallach Art Gallery, the Director of Undergraduate Studies, and one additional faculty member will make the selection. The recipient will be notified by September 30.
Stipend
Interns will receive a stipend of $3000.
A second internship will be offered in the summer following the academic year.
