Wallach Art Gallery Internship in Education

Description
Columbia’s Department of Art History and Archaeology will offer two internships to undergraduate majors during the course of the academic year. The student interns will be responsible for developing educational programs in conjunction with exhibitions at the Wallach Art Gallery planned for the concurrent academic year. Each intern will be responsible for designing a minimum of two different educational programs, scheduling the events, and leading four to six classes over the course of the academic year. Interns will work closely with the exhibition curators and under the supervision of the Director and Assistant Director of the Wallach Art Gallery.

Program Goals
1) To provide Columbia undergraduates who may be considering careers in museum education, teaching or curating with valuable experience and training.

2) To develop the educational potential of the Wallach Art Gallery and enlarge the audience for its exhibitions by offering educational programs for school children.

3) To bring members of the Morningside community into the gallery.

Eligibility
Rising seniors majoring or concentrating in Art History in Columbia College or School of General Studies are eligible to apply. Internships begin in September and run through the end of May. Applicants must be students in good standing with an excellent academic record.

Stipend
Interns will receive a stipend of $3000.

Application Process
Applications are due in early September and should be submitted to the Assistant Director of the Wallach Art Gallery. A complete application consists of the following items.

1. College transcript

2. One letter of recommendation from an art history professor, which should be sent directly to the Director of the Wallach Art Gallery.

3. An evaluation of two educational programs offered at area museums, indicating how you might emulate or improve the programs you saw, and your ideas about teaching. Teacher-classroom kits are available for review at the Wallach Art Gallery.

4. Personal Statement explaining your interest in the internship.

5. Interview

A committee consisting of the Director and Assistant Director of the Wallach Art Gallery, the Director of Undergraduate Studies, and one additional faculty member will make the selection. The recipients will be notified by September 21st.
