MM SLIDES
Approximately 500,000 35 mm slides, covering all areas of
Art and Architectural History. Strengths include Western Painting
and Western Architecture, as well as Asian Art. Significant
holdings in Pre-Columbian Art and Ancient Art and Architecture.
LANTERN SLIDES
Approximately 60,000 lantern slides in Special Collections,
covering primarily Ancient and Renaissance Art and Architecture.
PRINTS
AND PHOTOGRAPHS
Approximately 500,000 prints, photographs, postcards and gallery
announcements covering all areas of Art and Architectural
History. This includes several historically significant collections,
such as the Wittkower Collection, Meiss Collection, Gaignieres
Collection, Decimal Index of the Art of the Low Countries
(D.I.A.L.) and the Berenson Archive.
CIRCULATION
POLICIES
35 mm slides and lantern slides circulate to members of the
department of Art History and Archaeology, including faculty,
Art Humanities preceptors, Teaching Assistants and graduate
students. Slides also circulate to undergraduates
for the sole purpose of presentations in Art History department
classes. Faculty in other Columbia University departments
may also borrow slides for Columbia University class lectures.

COLLECTION
DEVELOPMENT POLICY
Collection development is driven primarily by faculty request.
Art History and Archaeology faculty may request slides to
be purchased or produced in-house. Images should strengthen
the collection and support the curriculum of the department.
The VMC also accepts gifts according to the VMC gift policy.
GIFT POLICY
The VMC accepts donations of high quality, well documented
35 mm slides of significant Art and Architectural works.
Accepted gifts will bear the name of the donor on the label
and be catalogued in accordance with VMC systems and merged
with the existing collection. Unsolicited donations that
do not meet the criteria will be disposed of as staff see
fit.
